If you would like to enhance the language files of eSpeak text-to-speech engine for your own language and make the speech sound more intelligible and with better pronunciation, you can do so by consulting the training material that we have prepared for this purpose. You will find this in our AEGIS training environment. Just click on the AEGIS eLearning link in the left of this web page and you will be able to access it.

Continuing my comment below on MeSpeak, SingularLogic estimates to have the beta release of MeSpeak available for testing by end users and/or experts sometime in March 2012.

From eSpeak to MeSpeak: SingularLogic is working within AEGIS on porting eSpeak Text to Speech engine from C code to Java so that it can be used in mobile devices. eSpeak is an open source, lightweight formant-based text-to-speech engine for desktop environments. Once the porting of this code to java is done, it will be possible to integrate eSpeak (or MeSpeak, as we like to call it) in mobile devices, even in those with low processing power, since eSpeak is very lightweight.

Czech Technical University in Prague has developed MIS tool - Mobile Impairment Simulator is standalone application which is totally independent on the mobile platform for which the mobile application is being developed. The simulation is done by means of on-the-fly manipulation with the pixels rendered on the screen typically by some mobile platform emulator. Prototype of the tool is developed for Mac OS X and using Cocoa framework for rendering of effects. https://cent.felk.cvut.cz/hci/accessible/index.php?page=mis

"The ODF plugfests are an ongoing series of vendor-neutral events, bringing together implementers and stakeholders of the standard. The goal is to achieve maximum interoperability by running scenario-based tests in a hands-on manner and discuss new and proposed features of the ODF specification." The eighth ODF plugfest will take place in Brussel (Belgium) on April 19th/20th 2012 hosted by Microsoft Office and organised by OpenDoc Society. On 4 February, I will give a talk about accessibility issues in LibreOffice at the FOSDEM conference in Brussels. (FOSDEM is an important open-source developer event.) The goal of my talk is to put accessibility higher on the agenda in the LibreOffice community. I will cover several types of issues: bugs and feature requests related to authoring accessible ODF documents, issues related to exporting ODF to other formats, and the accessibility issues of LibreOffice itself and its infrastructure for creating extensions. I already have a mental list of topics to discuss, but if there is anything you want me to include, feel free to contact me (christophe.strobbe@esat.kuleuven.be).

It has been published an interesting article that portrays the free software in Spain. Apparently, many Spanish users have heard of open source and many of them download free open source applications so they confuse free with "free of charge". A large percentage of users are satisfied with the free software and use it and trust it. A key aspect for the user confidence is in the free software community. It is also curious that free software users are opposed to using non-free software. Fabiola, POSIX stands for Portable Operating System Interface [for Unix]. It is the name of a family of related standards specified by the IEEE to define the application programming interface (API), along with shell and utilities interfaces for software compatible with variants of the Unix operating system, although the standard can apply to any operating system.

We know that blind people use screen readers. But what about speech recognition? There is a very interesting study from the University of Cambridge that introduces the Speech Dasher. This tool supplements information from a speech recognizer with a letter-based language model as well as the user themselves The study says that it allows fast writing of anything predicted by the recognizer while simultaneously providing "seamless fallback to letter-by-letter spelling" for unrecognized words. I would love to try it!
